Changing the way we eat is crucial for both the planet's climate and our health. At Still Good, we have been committed to this effort since our early days. If we want to engage in a sustainable transition in our food system, we must educate and try to put better eating at the heart of the concerns of future generations. Here are 4 advantages of sustainable food in our schools.

What exactly is sustainable food?

« Sustainable food is the set of food practices that aim to feed human beings in sufficient quality and quantity while preserving the environment, and being economically accessible and financially viable throughout the food chain. » In a nutshell, sustainable food is eco-friendly, healthy and accessible. Even though local, wholesome and environmentally responsible ingredients are becoming more popular, there is still a lot of work to be done before they become the norm in our schools.

The benefits of sustainable food in Quebec schools

1. Health

Sustainable food promotes and provides access to a wide variety of fresh, local and healthy foods, which contributes to the health of students and professionals in the school environment.

2. Education

It allows kids, as well as their families and friends, to become aware of the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Having sustainable food around also helps to develop good eating habits among young people. 

3. Local economy

It also encourages local partnerships with farmers, artisans and the food processing industry, leading to better food security for all.

4. Environment

Finally, having access to sustainable food teaches good habits and educates students about many environmental issues, such as pesticides, food waste, wasteful packaging, etc.

It's time for us to jump in and help schools all around Quebec to make the transition to sustainable food. We are proud to say that we have been working very hard, in collaboration with the Breakfast Club and several school boards, to improve the offer and facilitate access to delicious, healthy and responsible snacks.
